Hi everyone,

I have been facing a problem for a while now and haven’t been able to fix it. I’ve been in the hobby for a while now and managed to bypass almost every hurdle. There’s only one problem that I haven’t been able to find a solution for: HLLE.

For almost a year now, I haven’t used any activated carbon in my tank and I do water changes biweekly.

I have no idea why the HLLE on my purple and blue tangs are progressively getting worse.

My blue tang had it before the purple tang, and then I had marine velvet that broke out in my main tank due to a mistake. The purple tang developed its first signs of HLLE in quarantine after I dosed copper, and it’s getting worse despite the fact that it’s back in my main tank for the past 2-3 months.

One thing I should add is that when I set up my tank a few years ago, there was some stray voltage and a bit of current in the water so I put a grounding probe. Since then I haven’t felt the electric sensation when I put my hands in the tank. Am I overthinking it or could this be the reason? And if so, how can I fix it?

Stray, induced voltage has been ruled as a cause of HLLE. The trouble with carbon is that leftover carbon dust (fines) can induce HLLE long after the carbon has been stopped.

I used the omega 3 / hufa brightwell additive soaked onto pellets/flakes and my tang healed. No clue if this was the cause of the healing or not but its worth a shot.

I just ordered in 3 purple tangs from a wholesaler in LA and all three came in with lateral line. In speaking with my sales rep about getting them replaced she said they all were coming if with it.

A lot of dealers are selling these HLLE purple tangs at a discount rate, but really, if they are being over-exposed to carbon overseas, even the ones without visible lesions may develop them after a few weeks in a home aquarium....

Yeah they were selling them for only $84 but they didnt list them as having hlle. We bought 3 so we just bought into selling inferior fish cheap.
