Hi guys! So, after 20 years of hemming and hawing, I've finally decided to jump in and start my own reef... I've decided to start with a bigger tank since from what I've seen so far, they're more forgiving of mistakes(which I'm sure to make lol) and my daughter wants a tang and they seem to need more room to swim around. Also, with the price of tanks, I don't want to have to change it for a bigger one in a year or 2...

I spent a few days going to different shops and found one that was really nice - clean, friendly and not pushy. All the prices are pretty much the same so I'm gonna go with either a Marine x 110 or a Reef 190.

Since I have till Christmas to decide which, I figured I'd start by actually figuring out what I want in the tank - I definately want lots of coral, but that means making an aquascape that looks nice and fits everything. There's just so much information out there it's hard to take it all in haha. I'm happy to hear any tips or tricks you might have and I'm sure I'll have a ton of (probably stupid) questions along the way!

LOL, using Christmas to get a present for yourself? I've done that MANY times to reconcile a hight cost item purchase! I still do this after 37 years with my Lady. There's just a LITTLE more forgiveness (and a lot of eye rolling) when I play that card. I just broke the news to my Lady a few minutes ago as to what my tank and stand is going to run (6K). But it's gonna be a custom job with all the bells and whistles (48x38x25). I'm SO lucky. She said OK!!!!

So Greetings and Welcome to our collective obsession

Hello and Welcome to R2R! Great that you are finally jumping in. Years ago my brother in law advised that I should get the largest tank I could afford. I ended up purchasing a 180g. I took several years off from the hobby and upon returning purchased a 180g again. This time around my tank is superior in terms of the information I'v acquired from this website and BRS. Good luck with your decisions and remember that if in doubt then ask.
