so while preparing for my $800 Red Seal Reefer 350 to arrive, i have trying to be "frugal" about my shopping for support gear as well. Current USA Orbit Pro DUAL 48" LED light bar setup with one used and one NIB lamp, brand new dual brackets, three used 1050GPH wavemakers, brand new 1900gph return pump, Loop controller/manifold/etc, $425... DEAL! spare 48" used light bar for $30, i'll take it!. Kessil H80 Tuna Flora refugium light for $60 with gooseneck, check! custom cut refugium section for V2 sump for $65, its in the works!

so I recently find a Reef Octopus Classic 202-S skimmer at yard sale. aside from a TON of salt/calcium build up, it looks to be in pretty good shape. no algae in it(and was clearly put away wet), plius it has the V2 silencer, so im guessing not too old or used. $50 and its a deal. i get it home and put a 25/75 mixture of distilled white vinegar and tap water in a rubbermaid tote in my bathtub and fire 'er up with the gate valve wide open. OK, so the drain plug is missing from the collector cup. no big deal, $3-4. suction hose seems awful noisy. the silencer has cracked and been siliconed together. no biggie, $25 for a new one or im sure i can fab up a solution for a couple bucks. problem is, foam is just building in cup and nothing coming out gate valve unless i disconnect venturi hose and cap it off, so i unplug and let it soak in 8.25" of vinegar/water solution(assembled) while im off at work for 10 hours.

i get home, try again, same results, only this time theres a lot more white crap floating in water, so i let it run for a half hour or so knowing i will be tearing down. this time when i started, the water was still and i could see it spraying out from between the screws between the body and base. full disassembly and cleaning with a terrycloth rag, and it looks brand new. the impeller "fingers" are all mint, the gate valve is functioning properly again, and so i wipe down the armature shaft or whatever it is and start reassembling. i notice theres no gasket or o-ring between the body and base, but theres clearly a channel for it.

am i missing something?

there is no recess on the plate. just a channel in the body. i put it back together with wishful thinking. even though the 6-8 screws werent super tight before, they are now, and still noisy as hell and still little or nothing coming out the gate valve. i feel like im missing a gasket/o-ring

While I'm not familiar with that specific model, I did just look it up on BRS.

I would check the venturi(the grey piece the air hose connects to) they often times get plugged up with preciptate causing what your seeing.

cleaned it all with vinegar and water solution and a disposable rag. thinking i need to lay a nice bead of silicone or gasket maker in the channel thats molded into the body, but hoping someone chimes in with a gasket part number...

i do appreciate your efforts though.

I understand that and read that from the OP, but the venturi is such a small hole, that often times you have to poke it out with something(paper clip works great for this).

looking at the diagram there is no oring or gasket between the body and plate. I would disassemble the gate valve to make sure it's working properly.

i've tested the gate valve under running water and it works fully open just "maybe" doesn't seal all the way shut. NBD there. also, the venturi pipe is clean as new.

i didn't trust that diagram as maybe there is/was a gasket but it wasn't designed to be removable. salso, FWIW that diagram also doesn't show the venturi to silencer hose in the exploded view. i contacted the seller and he said he has the gasket. will find it and contact me. we shall see. i was really hoping someone would've chimed in here with hands-on experience tearing this model down :/ i just don't understand why they would cast it with a perfect gasket channel...

Surprised something like an o-ring(wearable part) isn't listed as a part you can buy. Or even listed in the exploded view on the assembly instructions.

Hello necro post!

Hi all... was a solution to this ever found? I just bought a used 300G tank and it came with a Reef Octopus Elite 220-int and I just cleaned it all up and noticed this same oddity. The skimmer base clearly has a channel for an o-ring / gasket type seal and there is none with the unit.. none listed on the exploded diagram. I wanted to get this skimmer tip-top before I put it into use so was going to order the o-ring but see nothing online. Weird. I guess it doesn't need one? Please advise on the final solution here. Thanks!
