I’m looking for help/advice on what I can best guess is an all for reef (AFR) overdose. I have a 45g JBJ AIO that I call 40g of total water volume.

I have been running AFR for the past several months with great results. I mix 1g of RODI with 11.5 scoops of AFR powder. This creates a half strength mixture. I use a BRS 1.1ml/min pump and have been running it for 9 minutes per night. It has held my alk steady for months and produced great ICP results.

I made a new mixture as my jug was running out and again made a half strength mixture of 11.5 scoops/gal. I ran it for a single night. The next day my pink plate and my black widow anemone looked pale. I ran an alk test on my Hannah that came back at 16.9! It was 9 the day before. I repeated the test 3 times with similar results. I also used a manual test I had on hand that came back above the max of 15. The jug had the amount missing that I expected it would. I truly don’t know what went wrong. I cut power to the dosing pump and physically removed the tube from the tank. It should be noted that my ph is monitored via apex and didn’t see any abnormal movement. It continues to range between 7.6 and 7.9 throughout a 24hr cycle.

I had some tropic Marin pro reef salt on hand that I ironically stopped using due to low alk. I mixed 10g and tested it at 6.9 alk before doing a water change. An hour or so later alk was 14.2. Yesterday (day 2) it tested at 15.5 which makes no sense to me. I changed another 10g with the new water at 6.9 again. An hour or so after it read 13.2. I just checked again and it is 15.1. I have changed 50% total water volume in the past 48 hours with water at 6.9 alk and my alk has went from 16.9 to 15.1. That doesn’t seem mathematically possible.

I’ve see no signs of precipitate. I thoroughly checked thinking maybe it was dissolving back in the water after I did a change. I’m at a total loss of what is going on and what to do next. Other than my pink plate and my black widow, there are no other signs that anything is wrong in the tank. I have plenty of other sps along with hammers, torches and zoas.

I’m looking for help to figure out what the heck is going on and where to go from here. Thanks.

In addition to above why not just manually dose the AFR and avoid the chance of this type of mishap again. I have that pump and I would never use it for AFR or two part as it isn't precise enough. It's OK for kalk. Its not like your spreading the dose out over the day, just 9 minutes. Also not sure why your mixing half strength? If you know what your alk consumption rate is you can calculate the correct dosage of AFR.

The argument you made is an argument against any dosing pump and has nothing to do with the product. There are days I’m not home to manually dose.

A simple search of people using AFR talks about a lot of people using half strength. I started with half strength when originally correcting for my Alk consumption and found that it did not take a large amount so I stuck with it. That’s why I’m trying to figure out what went wrong because this worked for so long.
