Love these shrimp. Great Thread.

Has Anyone ever tried to breed these in captivity? I know they'll spawn but has anyone ever had success with raising them? I would assume it'd be fairly difficult?

Man I wish these shrimp's diet were different. ut I guess something that pretty needs something that pain in the rear to keep them happy and healthy!

Same here. I love this shrimp but i cant bring myself to feed them starfish...especially the ones they like. Chocolate Chips are my fave too. Great pics everyone!

How are people keeping up their feeding regime? Ordering a new starfish and throwing it in every months? Or keeping a dedicated starfish farm with 5-6 starfish and cutting a leg off once a week and throwing it in?

They are absolutely stunning. I don't think I could stomach harvesting a leg though.

Yeah i have heard of people doing this and letting the starfish recover in the sump until next feeding.

Mine has only been given asterina stars from the beginning. I get them from my lfs.

HA! Awesome. Well that definately makes the little issue of feeding much more convienent. Hmmm, I wonder if you are onto something, propagating aterina stars for harlequins. Could be a nice little side project!

I guess it depends how much your shrimp eat and how fast you can propagate the stars...Lucky for Subielover he has access to a full LFS of propagation...might be easier than a single tank.

They eat more asterina stars than you could imagine. I don't know the exact number, but I think the one that I have eats more than 5 a day. I add around 20-30 every week or every other, and after the first couple of days I don't see anymore. When he is hungry he comes out in the open and works his claws around (think of a dj spinning a record, ha!) As soon as I throw some in, he usually goes right over and grabs one and retreats back into the rock.

I have 1 male and would like to get a female. It would be nice to give him a partner. I had a bad starfish problem in the tank so I bought him. Since the problem is gone and now requires me to feed him CC stars. I have placed one in the sump to have some food for later. These starfish are completely worth the effort. Absolutely beautiful.

Here is a pic of mine.
