I don't think hanna being off by one is a known thing or even that common. But it is something to keep in mind.

If you really want to know wich one is closer, get a bottle of calibration solution and take a measurement with both tests at the same time. But then again I've seen a post that someone's calibration solution was off.

I my case my trident calibrated with there solution measured a completly different bottle of solution spot on while my hanna measured it 1 Dkh higher. And is still the case with other bottles of calibration fluid.

My last Alk test was the final test from the bottle of reagent (test 25) so I tested the new bottle at the same time. My results were:

Hanna (old reagent): 7.7 - from fridge
Hanna (new reagent): 8.2 - room temp
Salifert: 7.3

My AFR doser is working, and the corals are happy, so, stuff it.

I learned a long time ago, pick one brand of test kit, and trust it. Every time you try and use another kit to verify the readings from a different kit, you'll get headaches, and they will never match each other.

In the grand scheme of your tank, does it really matter if your at 8, 7, or 9DKH? Highly unlikely it matters that much.

Yep, over the last 7 years I've tested every test kit. lol.

Gah, so I don’t know what to trust. It’s very conflicting information - would explain why some of my acros have burnt tips though. Although consistent, I feel that the initial swing up caused a burn.

Trust neither. Trust what your corals/tank is telling you, then use the test kit (pick 1) as a way to keep the alk where everything is happy.

Precision is more important than accuracy.

Thanks for all the feedback. I do enjoy the method for Hannah so I will transition over to Hannah (heck I bought it too) and trust that one and move on. My corals don’t look happy with salifert so I’ll switch over and slowly do the usual. Thanks all.

I also heard putting the regeant in the fridge is important too.

For anyone who really wants to know that tank alk, I recommend buying a standard acid solution and doing a normal alk titration:

I’d trust that much more than a hobby seawater standard.
