That’s inflated due to historical reasons for separating The City of St. Louis from St. Louis County. In a metro of 3 million people, there is bound to be crime. When you take crime statistics for a population that big and use only the population of the City of St. Louis as the denominator (280,000), you get a really big number.

There are certainly places I wouldn’t go at night, but that’s true of almost any big city.

You're right it is every city now. Make sure your fish are secure.

For this price you make a space lol.

One extra floor tile wide
One shoebox
Unless you have a 36” recessed nook

I bought it and have no space lol. I’m going to take down unused av equipment and relocate a file cabinet and put a tank there instead

Them beautiful tanks you see that are no algae and purple everywhere that isn't covered in coral. Are years in the making. It don't happen over night hang it there. Let the tank be and leave it for awhile even if you do get rid of the live stock let the tank run no light just let it be. It will get back in order. With time it will clear up and go away.

They are also exceedingly uncommon. Most of us have bouts of algae here and there. Don’t let it detract from the beauty of everything else. A little green patch here and there never hurt anything. The tanks you see in magazines shouldn’t be the expectation for every hobbyist tank!

I'm sorry your having problems and feeling down but the state you live in has nothing to do with your success, failure, or how you deal with issues that arise in this hobby.

EDIT: Not all that but these tanks were all started and run in Ohio

Hey all

I lost my female clown recently, as she decided to try to fly, which ended with her disappearance until I found her under a shelf, dried like a raisin. I've also had an outbreak of algae that is being very stubborn and difficult to remove. My urchin is giving it all she's got.

I've been on the look out for a 65 reef ready for a good while, now. It's been over a year and I've yet to find one within reasonable driving distance (less than 2 hours). My only local supply shop would order one for me, with an additional $160 plus tax fee. I refuse to pay that for a tank that is sold in other states without that add-on fee. Unfortunately and understandably, no one will ship it from out of state, either.

So, that leaves me with the decision to drastically over pay for everything here (ohio), keep my current build and hope everything doesn't die, or just give the critters away and accept the loss. Considering how I've been feeling lately, I think I'm going to find a good home for everyone and hang up the towel. It's just too difficult to find or do anything of value in this state, anymore. Maybe one day, when I inevitably move, I'll start up again.

This seems like an awesome community. Hopefully everyone else has better luck than myself.

✌️
Happens to everyone. Every 5-10 years i seem to start up a reef tank and eventually wind it down. Cyclical almost. Good luck in whatever you decide

I wish I had older pics of my tank. I went through hair algae, diatoms that were horribly thick. That brought with it red slime. Fought with flat worms once before, faught marine velvet once and lost. My most recent photo after giving the coral a much needed hair cut. The purple gorgonia and leather on the right were about the size of basketballs. They literally took up half the tank each. My tank is 5 years in. The past 2 years I haven't fought with algae issues. One of my biggest failures back when I started in the early 2000s. Was going to fast with to new a tank. A tank is saltwater don't hit maturity until around a year of age. Things really start to change at around 3 years.

I had bought with such things as micro brittle stars. Exploding in the hundred than deal with consequences of die off. Did the same with astrea stars. Same with bristle worms. All that micro fauna has to find a happy medium in your tank. And nothing happens over night.

It's Ohio...
Between living in Florida and Ohio, Ohio has much more experienced reefers; the LEAR group in the Cleveland area throws the best frag swap (not counting Reef-a-palooza) that I’ve ever been to, and that’s quite a hefty number.

If you’re still looking for a tank, or general local help, have you tried the Facebook groups? There’s a particular one for your area.
For Ohio, much more activity on that platform.

It's still Ohio. And your anecdotal evidence does nothing to convince me that people who are land locked cook better sea food than people who are at the heart of the ocean.

Also, it was a joke... I thought ops claim of Ohio being a hindrance to reef keeping to be a bit strange.

If I had some money to burn I would jump on this. I'm so sick of the 60g cube layout.
