I've been out of the reefing hobby for several years and I'm starting from scratch with nothing. It'll be about a year before I can set up the main display tank, probably a Red Sea Max S-700 (184G) tank. I'm considering getting a Red Sea 170 (43G) tank as a grow-out tank.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on getting the smaller grow-out tank first and using it for coral quarantine. Once the main display tank is fully established, I could repurpose the smaller tank as the grow-out tank. This tank will only be used for corals, and fish will have their own quarantine tank, so no copper or coral-harming medication will be used in this tank.

Would this be safe to do? Am I overlooking anything in my thought process?

Thanks

I think it would certainly be safe to do. Though, I would suggest perhaps looking into a shallow frag style tank if it will be a long term grow out tank. I find that it is much easier to dial in light and flow settings on my frag tank, and it's also easier to get your hands in the tank for maintenance. Check out my tank thread if you're so inclined, and welcome back to the hobby!

I didn't think of that. Thanks! I was more focus on wanting to test the Red Sea world before committing them for the big tank. Too many options in the reef world

That's a lot of money on a grow out tank. Save your money for you main display. Get you a 40 gallon breeder tank from petco and throw it on one of their stands. They have great dimensions and you can run some cheap hang on back equipment. That's what I would do anyways.

I like the more economical approach. This is going in to a space I share with my wife so esthetics sometime overrules function and my wallet :face-with-tears-of-joy::confused-face::crying-face: I will have to see how I can pretty it up
