This picture keeps coming up as the random picture of the moment (or something like that) on the opening page.

Nice job, gary! Man, having tried for many hours trying to capture a nice pic of my clowns (or other constantly-moving fish), I admire your talents!

Whatever you've got, wish I had it! I love nice pic's, and this one is SWEET!

Stunning picture for sure!

I'm not even a clown lover and I'd frame and hang that pic, great work!

Was a flash used? or external light source of any kind?

I find the hardest part of capturing crisp detail in fish is not having enough light to counter the low light noise issues.

Exif says no, and ISO only 200, at F18!!! Gary, do you have a portable sunshine over your tank? ;)

Awesome image!

Labman, those are very kind words. Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy my images.

Junior, in fact two flashes were used. This shoot was an experiment to use a remote flash set in slave mode and my usual on-camera flash. The experiment worked much better than I expected and gave me some nice texture on the fish. The on-camera flash is mounted on the hotshoe with the head tilted at 45 deg. and a white card attached. I shoot the camera manual and both flashes manual. For most of the shots, I believe the flashes were set for 100%. The remote was simply attached to a tripod and placed to the side, above the water and about 45 deg. to the water surface. The two-flash approach needs some perfection. One of the drawbacks is that, at the wrong angle, the remote flash tends to illuminate any water debris, forcing me to spend a lot of time cloning.

OK, now that totally makes sense. Ive had great results using white and silver bounce boards over the top of the tank.

I havent been able to do that at home with my current setup, but have done it in the past with excellent results.

Also, angles towards the surface of the water with a 45 degree flash has been an interesting result.

By far my weakest area of photography is understanding how to use artificial light sources and flash. I really need to sit down with someone like you for a few hours and get up to speed.

Mike....HELP!

Impressive manipulation of light Gary! I have only tried flash a few times, and have not perfected it by any means.

Junior, I think we should get together and play. I have a 550ex and a 420ex that I can slave together, PLUS my studio strobes. I'll bet with those beasts we could get some really cool angles. We would have to help each other out though, as I don't have any booms for the strobes. (Never found a need for them at a wedding!)

not a problem.

sounds good to me.

OH OH OH, off topic, sorry gary...

I just downloaded a trial of Nikon's Camera Control Pro 2 software.

I can control everything right from my laptop and even use the MAC BOOK PRO monitor as a high def view finder to ultra precision focusing.

Not to mention how help of a teach aid it could be on Sunday. Not having everyone have to walk up to a camera to see what heck you are talking about when explaining where to focus on a subject etc...

Gary has some awesome photo's both of the reefs we keep and out in nature! He keeps trying to show me his tricks, but I keep forgetting to practice and then he has to show me again. I'm his worst photo nightmare LOL. I promise Gary when I have these next 2 tanks done, I'll be ready to really concentrate and learn .... ;-)
