Fritz Salt Issue

Hi -

I’ve recently switched to Fritz Blue Box from Instant Ocean purple box. I have a water mixing station with two stock tanks that are pre-marked with gallon marking on them. I buy salt by the 200 gallon boxes which is 50 gallons per bag. With instant ocean I could mix up one bag of salt and end up with 50 gallons of saltwater. Very rarely did I need I need to make adjustments (adding salt or water, etc.). With Fritz I am only getting about 45 gallons of saltwater. I’m on my 3rd box and this has been pretty consistent. Basically I feel like I’m being short changed about 10% (paid for 200 gallons and ending up with 180). Has anyone else noticed this?

I haven’t noticed, but I don’t keep track so I wouldn’t have any reason to. I use just a hair over 1 cup per 20 gallons to get 35ppt.

Oops. 10 cups per 20 gallons - not 1 cup.

Yep. Their calculator says 63.2 pounds for 200 gallons at 35ppt. The big box is only 55 pounds which would be about 175 gallons at 35ppt.

That is it. There is a calculator on their website that confirms it. Do have any idea why they show it at 30 ppt? I thought standard was 35 ppt.

I don’t know, but they do mention on their site that 1.020-1.026 is the “proper range”.

Makes the boxes seem like to do more than they do?

I do not recommend 30 ppt.

Been using io from 1986 . Still using. Back then was salt most everyone used

When I read this, I didn’t initially see the edit…I just went straight into a panic attack thinking that I have been WAAAAAY over-doing it on salt over the last 30 years

For our cultures we mix at 1.023 salinity and it takes me pretty close to 20 cups to mix 42 gallons with IO. I use Fritz Blue Box RPM for my tanks. I mixed to the top of the handle indent on a brute 45 gallon grey trash can which I believe is 37-38 gallons. I added 10 cups and came to 1.012 I ran out and had to go to the garage for a new box, can’t remember if I added another 8 or 10 then and was at 1.023 so 18-20 cups put me at 1.023 and 20-22 cups put me at 1.025. For me Fritz takes less to make the same water (the LFS that sold me it to start when I got back in the hobby says it takes less than IO as well).
