Hello,
Yes I know this is a reef forum yes I am a reefer but I own a planted tank as well. This tank is around 3 years old. I went in to remove frogbit but found a surprise in my filter. Some old media so naturally I take it out but suddenly a whole bunch of brown water pours into the display!!! The water is now cloudy and brown view pictures below. The fish are acting normally however.

Just put some polishing pads in your filter. I have a FX4 in my planted tank. I only open the canister every 6 months. But when I do, I take the hoses and all off the tank and flush the physical filter to free it of all the milk in the lines. Just remove the polishing pad once the water clears.

I don’t put magic bottles in my planted, now that I say that I wish I followed the same advice on my reef… lol. For my planted tank, it’s a super simple system (oh, the irony…) if the water is cloudy, it’s one of two things. So either a polishing pad or if it is bacterial then I turn the UV on. My planted tank is coming up on 3 years old and I recently made the mistake of vacuuming the substrate some. I’ll never touch the substrate again. The bloom was intense that followed. I’m using that black planted Fluval substrate, I guess it really is doing its trick. I just ordered some red plants, and need to put them in the substrate. I’m a little chicken, lol.
