Hello, my 13.5 Fluval evo tank has been setup for 10 months now and I’m facing algae issues. I started the tank in October 2023 with live rock from my LFS, since then I’ve been having different types of algae problems.

For the first 6 months, I had a gha problem where there was a huge patch of long gha on my biggest rock. I tried adding a tuxedo urchin and using chemipure elite to solve this but it didn’t work. I ended up solving the problem by spraying hydrogen peroxide on the patch. My phosphate went from .9+ to .1ppm during this time.

There were 2 months where everything was fine and there was no visible algae. My phosphate was <.1ppm during this time. However, during the past 2 months I have been very busy and haven’t been able to take care of the fish tank. I’ve only done a few water changes and haven’t replaced the chemipure elite in the tank.

Because of this, there are algae films on the glass, bubble algae clusters on the back wall, bushy algae growing on some of the glass, and some sort of encrusted yellow-ish algae growing on the glass as well. All of my rocks are also tinted green.

My clean up crew right now consists of 3 blue legged/electric blue hermit crabs, an emerald crab, and a tuxedo urchin. I’m going to start doing the frequent weekly water changes again, replace the chemipure elite bag, and physically remove some algae. Is there anything else I should do? Should I add more to my clean up crew or maybe add a UV sterilizer? The water in my tank has always been very green; not sure if that means it has a lot of phyto.

I’m also wondering if it’s possible to swap the rock out the rock I have in the tank with live ocean rock? Would that harm anything? I have clownfish, coral, an anemone, and inverts in the tank. I’m asking this because I have a new 60 gallon tank I set up a few months ago that has never had an algae issue because I used live ocean rock. I’ve only ever had some algae on the glass that I can just scrape/brush off with an magnetic scrub.

Yes, you can swap your rocks for wet live rock without any issue.

But I have to put it out there, the algae issue is likely not based on the rocks IMO, wet rocks from the LFS should work equally well as wet ocean rocks.

Tell us about your maintenance practices.

Do you do water changes? If so, how often and how much?

Are you using tap water or RODI?

Good husbandry will go a long way in keeping algae under control.

I would do 10% weekly water changes using rodi water with 0 tds. Other than that I would just clean the glass, clean filter media in tank water, and replace mechanical media.

It sounds like you are on top of things. But the general rule of thumb is faithful 20% weekly water changes. You're currently doing 10%. I would double the size of the water change.
