What are y’all using to take great frag and coral photos. I have an orphek lens kit and it’s not cutting it. Digital camera maybe? When I zoom in on my phone it gets blurry and not nice at all. I can only take pics of coral extremely close to the glass.

I use a GoPro. It has become my go to for all of my pictures. Nice to be able to use it under water. I have a colored lens for filtering blue light

Can you share the information on your lens you use? Never thought to use my GoPro for pictures and would like to start doing that.

Reefin art lens (orange)
All blue channels + Violet and either zero white or whites around 3-8%
Shoot straight and perpendicular to the glass-no angles

Make sure glass is scraped and cleaned

If the phone won’t focus then you are too close. There is a minimum distance needed for the camera to focus on an object. Back up slowly a inch or two or three until the coral is focused. Then zoom from that point

I just took these. They are on a frag rack on the front glass. Started at the glass, zoomed all the way out and it’s blurry. While watching the screen I slowly back the camera up. When I got between 1 and 2” from the glass it became clear. Then you can zoom in and get a pic

Those came out amazing. I have an iPhone 15 pro, my wife has the 14, my daughter the se and my son the 8. I have tried all these phones and endless combinations of lens and zooms. I feel special because I just can’t get it. I wil try your method and see if I just been doing it all wrong all along.

I use my iPhone. You’re right though, some closer shots get a bit distorted. I have a Canon 5D. I should really take some pictures with that!
Yea I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong. I was thinking about getting a digital camera for “macro” shots and maybe that would work? I feel like the camera on my phone is amazing but I can’t capture good tank shots

I think thee is something minor we are overlooking. I have iPhone se and iPhone 11 and both take great photos.

Let’s start here. How far are you from the glass

So some I am up all the way to the glass some I’m even touching the glass. I move my phone to and from the glass. Also with zoom as well.

I use a couple of things. Either my iPhone 11 with an orphek orange and macro lens attachment. My wife's iPhone 14 has the same lens attachments. Or I will pull out my Nikon 5600 and get photos with that

Sometimes you have to stand back or get closer to take the photo. The lenses have an optimal distance from the subject that has to be maintained. If you are looking to take macro shots, using the magnifying lens in the Orphek kit will help keep a sharper focus. Or try the macro function on your phone. I also take a high resolution shot from further away, and crop it, rather than zooming in while taking the photo. Also, post editing helps a lot. Cameras are not as good as the human eye, and some “artistry” may be required.

I was strongly thinking about a Nikon. How do they come out? Do you need any lens for the Nikon?

I like my Nikon. I want to upgrade to one of their mirrorless models with a macro lens to get better pictures overall. For the best possible photos? You should invest in an orange lens cover and a macro lens; those would give you the best photos on one.

What lens are you using?
You also shouldn’t be against the glass unlsss that’s where the phone is showing a sharp picture. You almost always need to back away until the image becomes sharp, then zoom a little from that point

If you are using orange and macro, just use orange by itself
