We are going to start a little nano tank, my wife will be looking after it, she's going to build the scape this week but then going for an operation so wanted to wait until the new year when she can maintain it, I think just set it up now fishless so the rocks can start to do their thing, but what's the simplest way to cycle a tank that's not going to have fish in it for 4/5 months?

IMO the simplest slowest way is to add a small pinch of flake food once a week. This way takes about a month to cycle the tank, and the weekly pinch of flakes keeps it going.
