I am starting up my first saltwater fish only tank. What parameters should I be looking for besides specific gravity, temperature, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH?
I like to test my fish only for Alk and run the Alk a little high, especially of you are running it with a wet dry. I normally shoot for 4.0 to 5.0 meq/l. The reason for this is because fish only tanks have a tendency to run a little higher in NO3 than reefs. As well they have a tendency to have higher DOCs. Due to the higher NO3 and DOCs, fish only the tanks draw more from the buffering capacity of the tank and can deplete alkalinity faster causing drops in pH. So to be on the safe side I would bump up the alkalinity with your buffer of choice.
