Hello everyone, I currently have a 40B FOWLR tank that’s up and running and wanted to add a sump 20L for better filtration and water quality. I have no issues with my current HOB Fluval 70 and skimmer + UV, but wanted to free up space on the back and hide the equipment.

I’m currently debating between

1) Keeping the current setup
2) HOB ESHOPPS 300 and a 250GPH return pump
3) Draining everything into three 27 gallon tubs and drilling the tank

If anyone has opinions on the ESHOPPS 300 HOB overflow it would be greatly appreciated.

I also when designing my sump was wondering if putting the protein skimmer in the same area as the sock is a good or bad idea, the bubble trap will be from the sock into the refuguim then into the return chamber, crude image below, or should I divide the sock off from the skimmer and have it go sock to skimmer to bubble trap.

if your plan is to keep the filter socks and skimmer together, i would do this:

drain + sock(s)/skimmer/heater chamber, refugium (if you are going this route?) and bio media section, bubble trap, return. with the bubble trap, from what i've commonly seen in other sump builds is that it is after the skimmer chamber, not before.

Thank you! I plan on doing a refugium as well, I appreciate the information! Still in design phase but I will definitely take your recommendations
