I did some digging but I have not really found an answer. I am looking at getting a fleece roller and in general I am trying to be environmentally friendly. Fleece is normally made from synthetic materials, usually recycled plastics, is there any option out there that would biodegrade or is using wool instead of plastics to make the rolls? I am specifically looking at getting a redsea reefmat 500 if that makes any difference to the conversation. I do not keep many fish, mostly just corals and clean up crew in a 57gal total volume tank and sump but im trying to polish the water and deal with the general stuff that flows through so the skimmer does not have to work as hard.

I don't know of any third party fleece rolls that are compatible with the Red Sea ReefMats (either model). The main reason for going with a fleece roller is so that you can actually go on holidays (since you can get between 20-60 days of filtering before having to replace the roll). You may not notice a huge difference in overall water clarity - only quality in terms of lower nutrient levels (nitrates and phosphates).

I don’t know about Red Sea, but I do know the fleece used by Smarter Reefs is actually washable in a washing machine and can be re-spooled using a separate tool they sell.
Interesting. It doesn't look like they sell the tool separately (it's bundled with their protein skimmer).

Oh you are correct, for some reason I thought it was available separately.

I actually met the owner James not too long ago at Reefapalooza, he’s really great in person and I think it’s worth a shot to talk with him and see what he has to offer.
IIRC they also make standalone roller mats, as well as skimmer/roller mat hybrids, in addition to their “regular” self-cleaning skimmers.
