I’ve recently noticed that many of the new members on R2R are women. 30 years ago I was totally in the minority and it is nice to see the gap closing. I’m still, typically, the only woman shopping at my LFS, but it’s nice to know there are more of us in the hobby these days.

@Thuan @armyvetheather @SueAubu three more fellow women reefers!

There is an entire Reef Chicks group on Facebook.

I haven’t met many women reefers locally but I’m sure they exist!

Where in Indy are you? I’m in Westfield and have been thinking of joining INDMAS for awhile now. We moved down here from the Chicago area 2 years ago.
I live south of Indy in Columbus. always down to have a fellow reefer come check out our build. @MrsBugmaster is in INDMAS. I was but haven't paid dues in a couple of years. good group of people when i was in it, not sure how it is now.

I love it! Have only been involved for five years and my guy does most of the "heavy lifting" with tank maintenance etc. I am still trying to learn the do's and don'ts why's and why not's...Sometimes it is overwhelming. I have however fallen deeply in love with each and every creature in my 130 Gal Red Sea tank. Had wanted one for over three decades when the stars aligned and I was finally able to dive in!! Full pun intended :p

Well welcome aboard! I’ve had SW tanks for 3 decades and am still trying to learn the do’s and don’t. The hobby, and knowledge of it continues to change faster than we can keep up with.

Even 15 year ago there were not that many women represented in the mix. And for the life of me, I can not understand why. But there were only a handful on 3Reef. At least that I knew of. The magic of User Names does equate to anonymity in this regard. And I would fully expect women to have nicer tanks. Women tend to have a better head on their shoulders, are more methodical in their approach to anything and are generally smarter. It's still a male dominated society, but that ain't gonna be the case for long. I really hope that this trend keeps modifying the balance, as it can do nothing but improve what this hobby can be.

Yes fellow lady reefer here!! I'm almost always the only woman shopping when I go into reef stores too!

@F i s h y c'mon, droppin the ball here!
@Stang67 @danieyella @EeyoreIsMySpiritAnimal
I hope a guy can pile on here. My wife loves the hobby but I’m am definitely the mouth piece on the team, lol. That said, Sunday we travelled an hour to check out a store across town and it was very telling. Well organized, super clean, aesthetically pleasing you could say, some minor decorations. It felt like a nice retail store. Not just a fish store with a bunch of tanks and haphazard stock. The owners are a husband and wife team and it shows. For my wife’s sake and the sake of the hobby I would love to see more women involved.

I love how you think!
I was thinking of adding “I’m a girl” under my username. You are correct that it’s hard to tell. I haven’t decided if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

That is great! In the Chicago area there is a reef store, also husband and wife, but very messy. LOL. I’m guessing she’s more of the help and less of the managing end.

Lady Reefer here! And not just reefer but Neo Shrimp, Jumbo Goldfish and Guppies too. I love all my fishies! My Reef tank lives in my office so it's all mine and i get to talk to my fish all day long :) Located in NJ (Philly side)

My username is perhaps one of those that does not scream I am a girl, ( actually an antique girl, LOL). I have also been in the hobby a long time, 25 years.

Hi there! I’ve been in it for as long as you… and also somewhat of an antique. We should be proud of ourselves for delving into a hobby that at that time was possibly 99% men.
