some how my dad ruined a battery when it was on a tender. From my time in trade school, i don't Rember hearing anything and a drained battery freezing.
Again I can only speak from experience. Dead batteries will freeze. Many people just bring them inside during the winter to prevent that. I'm lazy and choose to leave mine in and maintain them with a battery tender. I only use the Battery Tender brand and it is what I recommended to my customers that didn't drive their cars often enough to keep them charged. I never went to trade school but I have a bit of first hand experience as an auto tech for over 30 years.

EDIT : I'm referring to lead acid batteries. I can't comment on any others.

yea all other batteries are sealed and can't freeze. I owned a optima gel cell battery and that sucker lasted 18 years. Led acid get the job done but are not the best.
