First post, did a search and surprised I did not see the question. I am looking to upgrade my sump in size drastically and I am seeing the new sumps at 50% where the drain lines drop into the sock and others where it enters a comapaartment and then overflows into the sock (my current set-up).

I am curious how difficult it is to remove and change the socks when the drain tube is half way down it, wouldn't you need to pull the sock down that far to remove and be allowing junk to flow back into sump?

I don’t have direct experience with this setup, but in my experience the crud is pretty well stuck to the sock, so submerging it for a second probably isn’t a huge deal.

The ones where it enters a compartment and overflows into the sock is the newer and better design. Mine is the old one with a single sock holder and I use a flexible drain hose so I can pull it out it when I change media. I stopped using socks and have a media cup with floss now.
