It shows up as a rusty color on sand. I have had it for over a year in my 80 gal tank. It spreads very rapidly. It seems to attach itself on individual pieces of sand.
It looks to me that at some point they detach from the individual grains of sand and some kind of algae growth encompasses them. When it gets to this stage the sand gets rather dark and ugly and in advanced stages of this I get Spirulina Cyano growing over the top of all of it.
Also I can't be sure but also looks like individual cells can burst releasing spores? Maybe why it spreads so quickly.
I am assuming that the free floating stuff is the same as what is attached to the grains of sand but it looks very similar.
Thanks for any help.
