I’ve got one pound of aquabiomics sand coming later this week and was wondering if you guys just throw it right into the tank or let it cure a little first? I ask because I got the free 2 day shipping so I would expect some die off from transport. Slightly concerned about a large ammonia spike if I just throw it in. Any suggestions are welcome! For context it’s a 120 gallon system 8 months old with about 40 lbs of “ocean direct” sand already in it. My other thoughts are 1lb isn’t much and my system should be able to handle it. I dose 10-20 ml of ammonia occasionally to get my nitrates up and never have an issue.

Thanks!

I would be more concerned about clouding the water with fines than an ammonia spike. I suggest you wash it with water in a bucket several times until the rinse water is running clear. Then to add to your tank you can use a piece of 3-4 inch PVC and a funnel to add the sand sonit doesnt just disperse into the water. You place the pipe on the bottom and add the sand through the top. Then slowly lift the PVC off of the bottom to let the sand flow out slowly and you can direct it where you want it.
