Do I need to use I lid on a Clownfish tank?

The only fish I have ever lost to jumping was a clown fish. I had bulk reef supply mesh lid but it was sumpless tank and I had some hob equipment like you do. there was a small gap there that I had covered with egg crate cut to size and the fish still jumped out. If you use egg crate, i recommend covering that egg crate with 1/4" mesh cut to size. Egg crate will not stop smaller fish, you would be surprised what can fit through there.

Eggcrate is way to wide to stop a firefish from jumping.

Yup. I was misinformed on a forum post. I was hoping it would at least deter and I underestimated the accuracy of a fish jumping. I imagined fish just flop out of water... nope. Once my clownfish hopped from one compartment in my sump to another with grace.
I'm a believer in options like a tight mesh, glass lid or canopies now.

Yea I know several people who lost clownfish because they jumped. One of mine jumped out of my tank, but luckily I was there to save it. A canopy is definitely worthwhile.

Yes a lid is a must. I had a clown jump straight up and back down, while I was doing some cleaning in one of my 29 gallon Biocubes.

Cut the eggcrate to fit around your filters and other items, cover the egg rate with the mesh. You can use zip ties to hold the mesh you the egg crate.
