DIY reagent advice, malonic acid for Hanna Nitrate HR

With the absolutely crazy costs that Hanna is now asking for a lot of their packets, I wonder if this DIY project went anywhere?

I got to the point where I identified all the likely candidates but by then the supply shortage had begun to subside. Still QC issues though.

Now, my interest has been renewed due to increasing prices and (still) QC issues. I have a bunch of projects ongoing so it's not at the top of my queue but every time I buy commercial reagents I get a painful reminder.

I've resumed researching this and more or less decided what chemicals to buy for the nitrate test.

I'm working on figuring out the ingredients for some other tests including some freshwater tests so I can place as few orders as possible.
