So several of you have failures with these large pumps?
Yup I bought 4 of them after hearing good things about them from WWC and Joe at unique corals. I was originally buying from Joe but then panta rhei said they will ship directly to NZ. One of them have been loud from beginning and one died after 3 months of use only.

Mine worked for a year and a half with no problems. I'm going to fix the controller and purchase a back up controller as well when they are available.

Lesson learned... I have lost about half of my SPS giant colonies at this point... while I waited for going on 6 almost 7 weeks now... SUCKS!! :crying-face:

Unfortunate that the price point does not come with some kind of emergency dispatch. Keeping spare parts sounds extremely cost prohibitive.

Out of curiosity I spent a bit of time reading a few years worth of various posts about these pumps. Problems seem hit or miss.

What about something very temporary like a large primed reeflow or two temp closed loop?

As for the Bill Wann drama… It goes back as far as I can remember. It was his demise at RC 15 years ago. Tigers and stripes kinda thing I guess.

Does the cost of the spare parts outweigh the cost of a total loss of this size should something fail? Not being confrontational but displays of this size I sort of figure redundancy and spares are part of the budget.

Super bummer, last night one of my long term bright green colonies finally started to RTN... it's the one that has outlasted most of the ones lower in the water column that have already gone... Kind of hit hard and made me think through what I want to do moving forward...

I’m so sorry to hear that. That is a huge bummer. What’s your game plan now?

spare parts or some type of emergency replacement (paid for a-la-carte or baked in to cost) at this level is what I would expect.

Plan for the next few weeks moving forward:

- Cull out the dead skeletons (so I don't have to see them anymore) the ones that I can get to. I've been putting them in a bucket and plan on recycling them into the CaRx when it needs media again

- I'll finish my treatment with Ciprofloxacin (have one more dose to go on the 12th)

- Carbon up the reactors (10 gallons worth to start)

- Weekly water changes (300 gallons each)

- Add new good bacteria to the system

- work on getting the flow in the tank dialed back in

- Plumb and test big skimmer in the garage in preparation to do the skimmer swap

Yes, I agree... these pumps are expensive... I would have hoped that they would be able to help a client faster than what I have experienced. Maybe they will be able to in the future.

Good news is I received my controller with the new power supply in the mail last night!! It is Incredible to see the amount of flow this pump provides!! It's back online at a constant 50% for testing. I'm still looking to get a back up controller as soon as they are available.

What are you treating with cipro?
Mainly Vibrio and Acrobacter…

Following this method:

Ciprofloxacin treatment

-10 day treatment
-Skimmers on
-No carbon, media
-UV & Ozone off
-Two 10% water changes 3 days apart
-dose with several bacteria supplements (to replace good)

Pathogen treatment:

a) 500mg/500gal - Vibrio
b) 500mg/100gal - Acrobacter

Every other day for 10 days

I wish you luck with this but it could end poorly.

I used Cipro a year ago to knock down some STN in my display. While it stopped the stn in its tracks, it also sent my nitrates from 5 to 80 ppm. After 9 months they finally started coming back down. Tank has finally stabilized a year later.

Thanks for the heads up… I did this same treatment a year ago too, I have bottled bacteria, new live rock and some buddies with some sand beds I can siphon to kick up my new bacteria levels… Hope it works out like last time ;)… I’ll keep an eye on my nitrates
