Diversify the periodic addition of bacteria to avoid any dominance..

Adding live sand which can be changed out occasionally better than bacteria in a bottle. Speaking of that such as from Tampa bay live rock and not bagged sand. No clue where that came from or what is still alive but have faith that from Tampa bay likely still full of life. Especially after speaking to them and noticed Ryan referenced such at RAP NY. Perhaps the best blind seeding approach
Yes, I don't think anyone tested live sand from a bag to see if it really has anything "live" in it. LOL

My point being that with that specific bag I’m using there’s no proof it contains live bacteria since the bag I had from years ago didn’t have an expiration date or pull date therefore no clue how old or still viable plus has anyone done a DNA test or confirmed where exactly taken and guarantee it’s always taken from same locality?

is it possible that some families will be wiped out over time? Is it possible for dominance to be created? And what do these dominations cause?
Yes - that's exactly what happens; the tank (like all ecosystems) finds a balance between the dominant species.

In our tanks, this seems to generally be thought to cause tank maturity/stability.
The microbiome in our tanks literally changes over time and seems to converge to a similar point/mix of bacteria for most tanks (discussed in the thread linked below); this convergence does provide a more stable microbiome over time.

I think there is a lot of marketing pushing for the constant addition of nitrifying bacteria. Quite frankly, if nitrification is occurring and there are no issues, who cares what species is doing it? Personally, I see no added benefit to purposely dosing bacteria on an established system. I'm sure there is some transfer as new corals, fish, etc. are introduced.

Here's some light reading

I was under the impression they were cysted bacteria; activated by h2o. The powdered bacteria are this type I believe; this is how I have it at least.

Never heard of that but I know from experience of daphnia showing up in tanks I tote down to the glass and washed with tap. Last want build had pods show up before I added anything other than bottled bacteria and ammonium chloride. Makes sense bacteria would also exist in a dormant cyst state but are those what we are talking about or just nitrifiers.

Diversity to me is the microfauna found on live rock which goes beyond just that cycling a tank.

I was trying to wrap my head around bottled bacteria, live sand, shelf life, etc and that's what I came up with. Makes sense. Could be one type though, or not, no idea. Nobody's releasing thier species info. Even of they did what would we do with that info. Hold the bottle up and nod "yup, that's in there" "I concur"

Just watched a video about n pH where even Hanna was question. Exactly how do we know it’s accurate? Just because it’s digital? All off what the manufacture claims? It is what it is

To the OP… what if what you are “pouring in” is not diversifying anything, but rather acting as a prime food source for another species, allowing it to dominate.

As other people have mentioned, without testing AND correlation of those test results to tank health (or whatever it is you think is the benefit) what is the use?
