Ok so I’ve had my fair share of fighting with small cell amphidinium dinos and have successfully knocked them out with silica dosing before.

Lately I added some more SPS to my tank and increased my lights and low an behold I started getting small cell amphidinium dinos- confirmed via microscope. Note my nutrients have remained stable for a long time over 7 months: PO4 (.08-.12) and NO3 (20ppm-35ppm) never coming close to bottoming out since my first go round.

I silica dosed and they went away after about a month. I took many samples and could not find any dino cells in my samples. So I returned to business as usual. I guess i missed some and they are back and so I have silica dosed again. Obviously (what I believe to be diatoms) came back in full force very quickly.

Now I’m second guessing my micro biology skills and want to know what you guys think. I do not think these are dinos- certainly not the amphidinium i am familiar with in my system- they move quick and are very elongated which is why i thought they were diatoms. Also i cant find any dinos anymore in these samples. What do you guys think?

diatoms! there are some pods and snails (strombus) that'll go to town on that stuff.
