Hello everyone,

I am a new owner of a Red Sea Max S 500. I've been going through and systematically silencing the system since it is in my bedroom. To that end, I've swapped out the return pump and the skimmer for DC run versions, and now I'm at the point where I want to swap out the static recirculation pumps on the back wall for something different.

To that end, I purchased a few MP40WDQ's from another forum member, and I'll be installing them on the tank. With those in place, I want to be able to shut off the 3 existing recirculation pumps.

Now we get to the problem. When I turn off the three pumps now, the water level in the DT drops. I thought that was kind of weird, and that the return pump + the overflow would set the level of the tank, but apparently there's such a decent amount of flow out of those things that they add over an inch to the overall water height, I guess by pumping water out from the back chamber they are in ( I can't think of any other mechanism since they are just 'closed loops' effectively.

So, I was wondering if anyone has deleted them from the tank in some way such that the water level can be appropriately set in the tank again. Are there plugs for the holes that I need to put in? Or perhaps some kind of mechanism I'm missing for setting the water level higher in the tank.

I welcome your thoughts and input. Thanks!

Unbelievably fortuitous that I read this. I have a new Max S 500 and also have a pair of the MP40's sitting in front of me. I want to create a wave in the tank and had planned on shutting off the 3 static pumps and just leaving the return on. Same issue. I assume it is because to your point they displace a ton of water and since the MP40's are externally linked (not to the closed system of the reef and sump) they don't displace any water...simply blow it around the tank. That is my take but I am new to this hobby so don't take my word for it. Thanks for posting and will definitely be following. Best of luck!
