So I have an ETSS 800 XR downdraft skimmer. It used to be on my 220 gal reef a few years ago and I was running it with a Little Giant 3 pump. It ran like a beast. Sold the tank and the pump went with it. I'm currently building another tank and intend to use this skimmer on it. My question is does anyone have any experience using a DC pump on a downdraft skimmer? I know these skimmers aren't widely used now and most things say that it has to be a pressure pump to run it. But I have seen a couple of discussions about people saying they would work with a DC pump. I just haven't seen much info on it and definitely not enough to convince me that it will. I'm wondering about the possibility for the lower noise and energy consumption. My uninformed thought on it is that since there's really no head height, if the gph is what is recommended for the skimmer then it should work?

No issue to use a dc pump, but also no real benefit or difference. Only plus would be if you got a really oversized one and ran it on a lower setting, assuming you’ll dial it up as the pump losses efficiency, tubing /plumbing clogs,…
