I watched live action. Anime I never finished all episodes. My kids did not want to wait for me as I was busy reefing ya know

I would highly recommend watching the original. The live action is very decent, like tbrown said. They polished up the characters and didn’t quite give them the development they deserve from the original. It’s a kids cartoon that I didn’t watch until maybe 2020 and as an adult, I genuinely love the characters from the cartoon.

For instance, when Sokka meets Suki of the Kyoshi warriors, he talks down to her because she’s a woman. She then shows him up, he learns that he was wrong, and a relationship blossoms between them. Or that Katarra actually isn’t terribly great at water bending, but works her but off and becomes great at it through hard work. They just kind of glance over those moments where you see the characters learn and grow in the live action.

Having said that, the live action did a few things that I really liked. The shining example of that is (Spoiler) when Iroh explains to the sailers on Zuko’s ship that Zuko saved all their lives by standing up for them against his father. That’s not in the original show but it was a really good improvement on the original. So much so that my head canon now holds that to be true for the original.
