Hi so I'm using coppersafe in my 210 FOWLR as a preventive. On the directions it says it only lasts 30 days. After around 30 day I tested the copper and it was around 1.10. Does anyone know if you can just add some more to bring it back up to 1.75-2.0 or do ihave to put carbon or cuprasorb to get it close to 0 then repose it?
Thanks

You can add more of the same type of copper (coppersafe in this case) to raise the concentration to 2.25 - 2.5. You will need to restart the 30 day count and be sure the concentration does not drop below 2.25. A concentration of 1.75 is not adequate to eliminate ich.

I imagine that the live rock and coral sand in your tank has been gradually absorbing the copper. When it falls below 2 ppm it becomes less effective. You should run it at 2 to 2.25 ppm for 30 days and then remove it through water changes.

Hopefully you have Hanna’s Copper Tester. When you say, “Preventative,” what do you mean? It’s not a good idea, to continually run Copper on your fish. Long Term, and even on a short term, it can damage a fishes liver and other organs. Also it will kill off all Pods, which in my opinion, is an unhealthy aquarium.

Copper doesn’t cause liver damage if dosed properly. That idea has been promoted by some people online here, but has not been borne out be histopathology in public aquarium fish (who mostly all use copper, and keep their fish for years). I also did an informal poll of public aquarists last year, and none reported latent mortality in copper treated fish.

Coppersafe often does not kill pods in a tank, although ionic copper will.
