most all the time it happens, it's not a good sign. Any fish that could be nipping at him?

There is the possibility of it growing back, but it's not a good one IME. Try and keep an eye out and if it dies, best to get it out of the tank. That said, don't go bugging him while he's still alive as that'll lower his odds of recovering.
