I Did a water change as well as cleaned the sand. i took the rock out and scrubbed the rock with a toothbrush to get all the hair algae off. Put everything back and did a water change. A few days later water is still cloudy and all fish are dead but one. Had 2 clown fish, 2 blue chromis and a bi color blenny. the last fish was at the surface trying to get air. I assume there was a lack of oxygen in the water. But i don't know. So disheartening to see my animals die. Does any one have an idea what caused the death of the fish? They where perfectly healthy. seems like they died out of no where. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you run any tests? Ammonia? How long has the tank been set up? When was the last time you did any maintenance? How dirty was the sand?
The tank has been up for a year. i did not do an amonia test. maybe i should. it was not that long since i did maintenance. maybe a couple weeks. The sand bed was fairly dirty. when i removed the rocks to clean them u could really see how dirty it was. so i vaccumed what i could up.

How much did you disturb the sandbed? And how long has it sat without a cleaning? Sounds to me like you disturbed the sand and bacteria and poop in the sand and caused a water quality issue. I always leave my sand alone for this reason. Im very sorry about your fishies :(

I didn't think i disturbed it that much. The power head did fall down and blow the sand at the bottom around to. I have never really cleaned the sand. Did not want to disturb it. I wonder if there was some bacteria that got released into the water column that took the oxygen out of the water. I have one fish left alive and he was gasping for air at the top of the water. I put the power head at top of water to really agitate the water and put oxygen back in and it seems fine now. To late for all the other fish sadly.

Yeah Im thinking the sand was disturbed. What was the pH of the new saltwater? I know my ro water is always low on pH so I have to add buffer
