The pistol shrimps "clicking" is a really neat thing....but it gets annoying quickly. The "click" can be a really loud POP sound that almost sounds like the glass (or acrylic) of your tank has busted. They can also make rapid "clicks".

The pistols actually make a pocket of air in their claw that gets so hot for a moment that it creates a boom. I have read before that the air will reach the same temperature as the surface of the sun. Congrats on the new member of the tank!

they definitely make the clicking sound... if you have a pistol shrimp its highly unlikely that youll have a mantis. They are mortal enemies and the mantis almost always loses unless it is huge and i doubt you wouldt see a huge one. ive seen someone drop a 4 inch mantis in a tank not knowing the problem about to ensue. the tiny 2 inch pistol shot out of its hole kicked up a buch of sand clacked like 5 times inside the dirt cloud and the mantis floated to the top dead. lesson learned. the clacking ive read is a communication to the mantis shrimps to stay away. it is also used in the tunnels to crack rocks. ive actually watched my tiger pistol come out with the goby gaurding him and walk right up to a rock and measure out to the spot he wanted, he then cocked the hammer and snapped a piece of live rock off right in front of me in the middle of the tank in broad day light. they say they can comm. with the shrimp that way also but i believe they communicate much more by the tail beating on the antenna from my experience. i love my tiger/ watchman pair, a truly amazing symbiosis.

I have a tiny, tiny pistol in my tank, like 1/2 inch probably. However, I can hear that guy popping his claw across the room.

the pistols do click with their claws due to the fast motion on the closing of their claws that produces a supersonic sound and heat all compressed on the snap! dont get too confident with it being the pistol... just keep the pistol in check, and look to see if there is any other mantis laying around.

Not really sure how many times you have seen a Pistol vs. Mantis. But I really doubt Mantis "ALWAYS" loses. In your case It would be be super rare, 4'' mantis vs 2" pistol and the pistol won...

The only reason I would say the Mantis lost is because of being dropped into a new tank and being caught off guard. Other wise a Pistol shirimp stands no chance vs a mantis if they are of equal size.

Mainly because of eyesight:
Mantis Shrimp - has the most advanced eyes in the animal kingdom. And they stalk their prey.
eyesight The Mantis Shrimp

Pistol shirmp - is pretty much Blind, that is why they have a simbiotic relationship with gobies..
Weird Creature Facts: The Pistol Shrimp

Can't access the youtube link from work. But if you google "mantis shrimp vs pistol shrimp". look at part one and part two. And read the comments in part two on how he can't find the pistol shrimp.

I am not willing to kill either a pistol or mantis to find out myself.

And I think you theory is incorrect and your story has a bunch of holes in it.

1) Pistol shrimps hardly ever leave there lair unless attacked or provoked. Because they are blind and can't see.
2) Not sure how the pistol saw the mantis shirmp to begin with.
3) And if he killed the Mantis he would eat it. So it wouldn't be floating to the top

Just my .02 - No inverts are safe around a Mantis Shrimp...

Just wanted to make sure anyone reading this thread knows that it is "NOT" safe to add a mantis and pistol together because of someones "one time" experience. It would be a costly mistake to buy a pistol shrimp to get rid of a mantis shrimp. I could go on, but I will stop here.

if you doubt as you say you do, then i would suggest you check out the latest CORAL mag on mantis shrimp (nov/dec 2010) (they do a comprehensive break down of a mantis vs. pistol), also i have had an extensive conversation with a marine biologist at state park one day after catching a 9 inch mantis shrimp in my cast net while fishing. sight is not the end all be all in the animal kingdom, look at bats and creatures of the deep who operate without light/sight. indeed the mantis shrimp doe have great eyesight and one of the fastest reaction times on the planet but that most certainly does not mean it is invulnerable/ unbeatable. also i NEVER said it was ok to combine them, i said it happened and my friend did it unknowingly so please dont go trying to put words in peoples mouths due to your poor reading comprehension.

1. a pistol is not blind but limited in sight (which still doesnt disprove anything) however, it does have antenna which are very sensitive to electric signals, which is what the clacking of the mantis shrimp would put out, also it will most certainly leave the lair, mine does all the time, especially if it is a kill or be killed situation, Survival of the fittest.
2. see #1
3. just because he killed it does not mean he would eat it, mine is very particular as to what it eats. also with it being double his size hes not dumb enough to try to get it into his lair. if its well fed then hell have no reason to drag the corpse and use energy better put to use elsewhere.

my opinion is not that of an uninformed shlub....im a longtime reefer with my degree in biology & a minor in marine biology and i have studied the mantis shrimp for about a year after i caught one, i also have a pistol/goby pair going on 2 years of very close observations. also do you have any of the 3 previously mentioned species. where is your first hand knowledge from?

no i do not, i believe they are ill equipped for the fight. i know its a pain but it might be easier to take out the rocks and dig him out, that's what we did when we revamped our tank. i believe you were trying to figure out how to get him out in another thread (pistol vs. blood shrimp).
