Clam Lovers Help!

Now that I got y’all attention can you give me tips to look for on a healthy clam once buying? There is a clam not sure the type at my local petco for a steal and I want to try to rescue it. Now I should mention I have never kept clams but this is the first clam I have seen at this price and it’s like 4x less than what I usually see. So it’s perfect to pop the cherry and give it a whirl. So any ideas of what to look for with it? Certain types I should stay away from if I can figure out what type it is? Certain size I shouldn’t got over or under? That it retracts when you pass your hand over it.
That the mantle is open wide but slit not gaping.
A ring of white growth around the shell.
No white patches.
That it’s sits well and upright on its own.
If it’s maxima or crocea, then lots of light, 250-300 par.
If it’s Dersa or noae, then medium light, maybe 150-200par
That it’s attached to some substrate, or that you place it on some substrate so it can attach its bysal cord.

Mantle refers to the like flesh coming out of it?

yeah. shell shape/growth and mantle patterns/colors

wouldn’t a noae require the same PAR as a maxima and crocea being a rock boring clam?

Mines been on the bottom on the sand for years.
Started him there and he stayed happy so left him with the derasa. Around 100par at that point.

The crocea seem happy closer to the top, maybe 225 par so I put them up high with the sticks.

Thanks, found it in our version of petco called big Al’s.
Been happy for years.
$100 bucks
Didn’t like it much at first, but I’ve warmed up to it.
