Here are some of the results when I was first messing around using a white plate as white balance reference. These 2 shots were using the same plate, but at 2 different angles (one had more shadow on the plate).

This is the same coral, just different white balance. Guess what color it really is. Neither one was really good in my opinion. The first showed too bright an orange and the rock behind was gray instead of coralline purple. The second was nothing close to the real orange, but showed some purple behind.

After I started to play with the manual white balance I got this shot (using my new porthole for top down shot)

closer to the true color (ignore the blurryness, this was before I started playing with the aperture setting which helped that problem, also turning on the image stabilization on the lens helped).

couple more shots showing using the white plate.

then using the manual white balance about 7/10 towards blue on the y axis.

again, not perfect, but getting closer to what I want.

One last shot, just cause I thought it was cool

Disclaimer, I am by no means any sort of expert on this, just sharing what I've learned in my few days of screwing around.

Shots look pretty good, I cant get a custom white balance shooting a white plate. For some reason the camera says " Correct WB may not be obtained with the selected image"and when I set it anyway pics have either way to much green or way to much red, and colors are way off. I have to manually set blue balance on my camera, It helps but I feel it can be alot better. As far as pictures being crisp and clear, yours seem to be pretty clear, mine on the other hand are inconsistant some come out clear , but most on the blurry side. Are you using a tripod? Maybe im just moving or the coral is moving to much with flow.

I think these are the best shots ive taken so far. I had to play with white balance a little on my laptop to make the colors a bit more realistic.

Those look pretty good to me!! One thing I've found is I have to turn off my return and Vortex power heads so there's no flow. Pics are much crisper. Your last shot with the rastas is a good example of the aperture setting. With a larger aperture setting (which is a smaller hole) the "in focus" range would be extend deeper/farther back.

which one is the aperture setting? Sorry for the noob question lol . Also, what ISO do you use? I know most say to go with the least possible 0-100 range, but pics come out extremely blurry with that kind of ISO with me . I have to shoot with ISO between 800-3200 to get clear shots. Any reason why this is?

Following, because the thanksgiving turkey brought my T5. I've been trying to figure out custom white balance, too, mostly without success. Last night I stumbled across a different solution: I have AI26s and the AI Director, and I discovered I can use the Director's iPhone app to set the light color to whatever specific temperature I like. Since the T5 has a preset for 7000K, I set both the lights and the camera to that temperature, and for the first time I got color very similar to what I see in the tank, with no post-processing.

I use the "Av" aperture priority setting on the dial which allows you to set the aperture setting with the roller by the button you use to shoot. I then go into white balance and set it up about 7 steps towards blue. ISO is then set automatically by the camer. By changing the aperture number you can fool around and see how they affect the focal set up of the shot.
Again, I am no expert, this is just how I have been trying to improve my shots
