So like the title states I got a new canon t5 for Christmas. No more cell phone pics lol . Now i need some advice on what settings to use to take the best possible shots of my tank , especially under full actinics. I am using the standard 18-55 lens, shooting in RAW and playing around with ISO these are some shots ive taken so far: Ok but i feel they can be better .

someone said on most DSLR cameras you can set the white balance off of an existing picture. so you would take a plain regular pic under full blues then set the white balance to that picture and take another pic and it would remove the excess blue and show amazing pictures. wish I could remember who made the post.

Might be a dumb question, but once the picture is taken, is it downloaded to a sd card, then transferred from sd card to computer to upload to this forum? or is there some other way to get picture from the camera to forum/photobucket/etc?

Need to know how to create a custome white balance , for shots in actinic lighting.

With my camera (a little point-n-shoot), you aimed the camera at something white that was under the lights (I used a piece of paper or white cutting board). Put the camera in white balance mode and push the button to set white balance. Then you're ready to take pictures.

Take a photo of a white pvc pipe in your tank with the actinics on and make that photo your custom white balance.
i tried putting a small white plate in the aquarium to take a picture of that, but when i go to set the custom white balance I keep getting this message : Correct WB may not be obtained with the selected image . Once set the picture looks red. like theres more red then anything else

I have been messing around with the same thing on my Canon T6i. I gave up on the shooting something white since it was difficult for me to get a white shot in the right light (always seemed to be some shadow). I started playing with the manual white balance setting. Started moving the zone towards blue (left on my camera on the X,Y axis. Immediately noticed a big dif on purple coralline and Zoa shots. Settled about 3/4 of the way towards the left edge. Going to move up/down today to see how it changes the color representation. Still is a little off, but much better than the auto white balance.

FYI, that message "correct WB may not be obtained with the selected image" always shows up when you are using a shot picture as the WB reference, at least it does for me.

Not a dumb question at all. Usually the pic is saved on the SD card that is in the camera, its then downloaded to the computer and then it can be uploaded to where ever. I use photobucket because the pics are to big to upload using R2R's uploader.

By "shot picture" I just meant one you have taken with your camera. I wasn't able to make that work well so went the manual route.

I have tried to figure out the photobucket route for posting here, but got frustrated. Is there a recent thread on how to do it?

So this is getting a bit frustrating , been playing with the camera for about an hour now and nothing. I still cant seem to get the custom white balance , and pictures come out blurry.

That helped, thanks.

I have started using the custom aperture setting with custom white balance. By increasing the aperture you get better depth of field which can help get the shot more in focus since a larger part of the shot is in the focal distance. I am going to post some of the shots i took while messing with the custom white balance.
