I live in South Florida and may have to get my house tented for termites during the summer. It’s in the 90’s most days. I have a 40g with a 20g sump. The tank is full of mature corals (mostly LPs), fish, and other livestock. I’m worried that moving everything out of the tank might stress its inhabitants more than sealing the tank and leaving everything where it is. The problem of course is the heat. Would it make sense to buy a chiller to keep things in check? I’m looking at the JBJ mini. My biggest concern about the chiller is the heat it puts off when it runs. Would this offset any cooling it might do? I can also put frozen water bottles in the tank and run fans to help. I’ve never had to do this and need some good advice! Thanks in advance for your help!

Find somebody local with a drop in chiller.

The fumes from the extermination not a bigger concern? Might in the end be safer to move all to large plastic tub with lighting and makeshift filtration somewhere other than under a tent.

I'm also in south Florida and we've been experiencing 90 plus and no guarantee there's not a period of 100 plus. Going to need a chiller for that extreme. Plus what happens if power goes out and one unable to reenter while tent in place?

I can seal up the tank pretty well. Plus I’ve done a lot of research and the fumes don’t penetrate the water. The ac helps during the summer so I haven’t needed a chiller yet, but of course the ac is off when the house is being tented.

Would a bunch of frozen ice bottles be enough?

Wouldn't the fumes potentially be introduced via skimmer or are you saying they are insoluble? Plus air tight without plants wouldn't choke air exchange?

I ask because tents might be one day in my future.

I’d turn off the skimmer, and you’re right, a seal would be a problem for air exchange. I’m not sure of the best solution

When in doubt or complexity introduces unknown variables then perhaps best solution to move everything out of harms way.

Maybe get a potable AC and tent it around your tank. At least you can use it for other things other than tank water when the fiasco is over.
If you’re like me, who keeps the house cool with AC, a chiller isn’t needed

Now that is a good idea. Makes more sense than a chiller.

Can the house ac stay on if the outdoor compressor isn’t covered?
