I agree, most def not BGM, however right in the auction it said:
"THIS IS A WHOLE COLONY ON THE VERY VERY VERY SOUGHT AFTER BUBBLEGUM MONSTER CHALICE I HAVE ALSO SEEN PEOPLE CALL THIS MIAMI HURRICANE CHALICE OR A MUMMY EYE CHALICE!! WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT IS A ONE OF A KIND ITEM AND A HEAD SELLS FOR 200++ ON THE WEB!!"
If you read that, its obvious its not the "lineaged" BGM. Not saying its right or wrong, but...

Its the sad state of the retail market of this hobby when you can not trust the majority because the minority are overly greedy and untrustworthy
Ill have to respectfully disagree with you Mark and Ian. I dont think the buyer went into this auction knowing/thinking that this was THE BGM chalice. Afterall, how could he? This person used the name and depending on who you talk to, a corals name should be based on how it looks, not because it came from Steve Tyrees tank. I am very familar with arguments on both sides and I say if it looks the same, then its prob the same coral. If you want lienage, pay a bit more, if you want a coral that looks identical, pay a little less. Its almost like saying somehow that Tyrees green slimer is different, and somehow worth more than joe schmoes green slimer.
And lets face it, if this were Tyrees auction, the piece would be double the price. I think the person who bought the coral, got what he wanted and is prob very happy. Based on the description (and numerous emails, im sure) the person was pretty clear about what he got.
As we all know, identifying corals based on a name is much easier these days then saying "hey did you see joes coral. the one with the pink eyes, green rim, purple base, blue rock, red tissue?" I personally think the naming craze/lineage thing has gotten out of control, so much so to the point that someone would be willing to pay double for something, that, to thier naked eye looks no different than something for half the price.
No hard feelings to those that care about lineage but I honestly think it has gotten out of control. Will it stop? Of course not? Was this guy ripped off? I dont think so

I can totally agree with you. If things were not so far overblown about lineage, this would of never of happened.
Just curious, What did you originally pay for the undata when you found it?
I've noticed that, that seller has used many trendy names for his auctions when they are in fact not even the same name.

When I had Gooch's Corals Steve Tyree paid a visit to my shop. I had a montipora coral that was nice but at the time I didn't think was that awesome. Well I sold him a two inch piece of it for $15. A month or two later he called me telling me he was going to add it to his site as a montipora orientalis. I think for around $80 a frag. A very small frag. I was a little shocked. Then I saw his waiting list grow to umteen years. I don't remember anymore but it was his longest waiting list at the time.
Well before he had it on his site I had another reefer buy two of the three remaining frags for $15 each( I had mentioned tyree purchased the frag). I kept one for myself but he kept trying to get the whole colony. This "hobbyist" told me both frags died in shipping and expected to get the third piece. I couldn't do that but did give him credit for his entire order that was supposedly lost. Found out this hobbyist had a history of pulling shady deals on unsuspecting e-tailers but hey I wasn't about to question it at teh time. I was more worried about building a good relationship with my customers and not thinking someone was gonna take me for $150(whole order cost with shipping). What was done was done. His replacement order was hand delivered to him by one of my friends that lived in the area. Guess what was there. All these supposedly dead corals. Guy was so shady he didn't even want to show his tank to my buddy. He ended up selling these corals for big bucks to others. Funny thing is he kept trying to scam me........until he found out I knew he screwed me over. Never heard from the guy again.
So I gotta say that for every vendor you guys think is trying to rip you off there are probably 100 hobbyists trying to do even worse things to the e-tailers or LFS. It is a very hard business to make money in( I lost over $80,000 in three years). After you had guys left and right try to take advantage of you even the nicest guys can become bitter. I personally could never sell coral again. I had so many people try to scam me it wasn't funny. I just gave you one example. 90% of the hobbyists are great, heck probably 95%. Fact is the bidder might have a higher disposable income than you or I and $1100 could be like $11 to them. I saw a one inch frag of my montipora sell for $350 on e-bay. I know the seller. And I know who bought it because I packed and shiped it for them. I was happy both got what they wanted. Some people also do not want frags. They want large corals and are willing to pay the price for them.
As long as there is a happy seller and a happy buyer it shouldn't matter if it sold for $1 or $10,000 to us. I personally hate e-bay and will never buy or sell a coral there again. I got burned to many times by sellers that didn't know what they were doing. Got some nice corals too but not enough to justify it ever again.
Sorry for the rant. You guys are entitled to your opinions and bring up valid points. But unless you know both parties involved you will never get the whole story. I have even seen people bid up thier own auctions to try and get the price up and end up getting stuck buying the coral they are trying to sell. Not saying it happened here, I am sure this was legit. But a lot of shady things happen on e-bay all the time. Not just with corals. Hate ebay, I just hate it.

What has been mentioned in this thread is the reason I will not buy from said retailer. But that's not the issue here.
Yes, the seller should obviously know what he or she is selling but the buyer should know what he or she is buying as well. If a seller knowingly advertises something as Bubba Gump's Chalice when it really isn't and the buyer falls for it....well....another sucker was taken.
The whole coral name game is a joke to me. The same coral can have 20 different names with each having a different price attached to said name. It's all junk. If the coral is beautiful it should sell itself and not have to be hyped up with these exotic names. But whatever, I respect the people who collect named corals. If they want to, go for it. Hell, I collect common wheat back Lincoln cents (among more expensive coins)! It makes me happy.

Whoe cares what its called. If the buyer is happy, thats all that matters. I have never been into names anyway. Look at zoanthids on 3 different sites and you will find the same zoanthid with at least 2 different names. I would never pay that much for any coral, except a very large colony of ricordea. Thank you!!!
