can I only use live rock in my algae tank?

Hi,

I'm considering to set an algae tank for my bottom filter system. Do I need to set bottom sand for the algae tank? I am worried that the bottom sand in the algae compartment will enter the top water compartment through downwelling and block the water pump. Can I only set several live rocks in the algae tank, and cultivate algae on live rocks ？

You can just use live rock. There are a few "how-to" threads that I've seen on R2R with respect to attaching algae to live rock, so a quick search or two should yield some results.
