What I like about Paul's approach is to make them hollow for the critters. How about for water management?
I see a use in connecting to the return from the sump, where the filtered SW is pushed through an "invisible" rock formation. My next DT will be a 120g 72" tank, so I'd like to pump filtered water below the wave makers, which is currently my "dead spot" in my 48" tank.
Added benefit, a hermit crab can climb right to the top, where the return comes in, and play King of the Hill, waving his little red claws.
