Hi guys I am new to the hobby and in the process of putting together a bigger 40-60gallon tank setup. However my question to you guys is what are you thoughts if I started up with a biocube 32gal. To get use to doing water changes checking water levels and taking care of the smaller tank before jumping into something of a bigger setup. I will be building my own stand for the biocube so I wont have to spend the extra money on a stand for it.

I'd just start with the larger setup honestly, there isn't any good reason to start with the biocube unless you're getting it for free or something. DIY stand effort is the same between a 40-60 gal and the biocube, and with the larger tank and stand you can more easily add a sump, which isn't required but definitely recommended, and can also be done DIY. Check out my tank thread if you'd like some ideas for DIY.

lots have the biocube32 including me. my pump just failed after 15 months. bought the sicce 1.0 to replace and it is really quiet. it's an easy tank and has minimal evap with lid closed but heats up more due to that.

Bigger is easier in saltwater Ive found But the biocube is a good starting tank. I have a 32 biocube myself and its my coral tank with some small reef fish. I really like it and its a good tank! I just hated the hood and the light on it so I removed both and put a kessil light on the tank. This is mine! I say go for it

Thank you for your advice. I appreciate it a lot. I also made a thread of equipment I am intending to purchase, I haven't bought anything yet as I am still planning the build etc.

Would I be able to remove the lid and just bought different lights for the tank do get rid of heat issues if i did plan to go with a biocube?

The bigger setup will be easier to start with

Biocubes have heat bent glass. Many of which were not annealed properly. And crack for no reason

I had one of those

When I got the replacement. I sold that to a guy whose Biocube glass also broke, which he was replacing

I know they look cute and all, but I wouldn’t

I am sure there are many others here who have had cracked Biocubes

yes, you can get rid of the lid. I leave my feeder lid open with a net to release heat. a bigger tank with sump is easier to maintain though. less swings with nutrients and salinity.

I started with a Fluval Flex 32 gallon—another common starter tank. Like the biocube, they are less seemingly less expensive. However, the closed top can cause issues with oxygen exchange, the lights are close to the water and make controlling heat more difficult and the unique shape can limit what upgrades you can make.

I would recommend you start with your planned goal of a 40-60 gallon tank. I would go further and state 60 is better (opens up more stocking options). Like the biocube, my flex is an AIO. I personally would really prefer a sump, as you can hide add-ons (protein skimmers) in the sump.
