Hi.
In start up phase, week 4. I have some diatoms, which I am cool with and some tufts of hair algae appearing.
There is an army of snails doing their work and I’m fairly relaxed with this being the usual cycle of things.
However! I have seen a few of these poking up and I’m afraid they might be the start of the dreaded Bryopsis.
Can any set my mind at rest or confirm that I need to get busy!

Thanks.

It looks like Bryopsis.

I am curious. What organisms besides the snails have you added to the aquarium so far?

That’s not good news! So far I have a 2 x starfish sold as okay for the tank at this stage. I was a bit concerned it would be too early, but they reassured me it was a good choice for an early CUC. Also 4 smaller hermits, a blue tuxedo, an abalone and two shrimp (skunk and fire). Rock is 25% live and 75% dry that had been co ‘incubated’ for three months in the dark beforehand.
For corals, a mix of LPS (galaxea, a few acans, zoas, Duncan’s etc). These were all QT’ed for a couple of weeks with dips every 6 days. All obvious algae was scrapped off.

What would you recommend? Let the cycle do its thing, or get aggressive (H2O2) on the Bryopsis?

Thanks.

I have a few more fronds visible now.
Any positive identification? If bryopsis, given I am in the early stage of the ugliest, do I leave and see what happens, or do I get aggressive?

Thanks.

Right. Now I do really need help.
I set up this 1000l penisula with a mix of dry and live that I spent 3 months incubating together to give me the least possibilities to have the bad uglies.
I started up and got Diatoms, no biggy. Stay calm, all is fine.
Then I get what appears to be Bryopsis, then I wake up this morning to see this.

Bubbles on strings. This seems to be a sure sign of the dreaded dinos.
NO3 is ~15. PO4 was around 1.
I’m feeding, specifically to avoid zero nutrients and dinos.

Can someone please tell me if this is the start of Dinos, or just very photosynthetic diatoms.

Quite concerned now. Thanks.

Bryopsis probably. Looks sorta like a feather.
I personally haven’t seen Dino’s get stringy like that in any of my tanks.

Thanks Ryan John.
So you’re pretty sure it is Bryopisis, and pretty sure it’s not Dinos?

To be honest, that is good news. Bryopsis i can deal with, Dinos would be a real bump in the road.

Yep. Week 3 of starting DT.
Better to go Flux Rx now before I get fish and more corals in. Nip it in the bud.

Here’s what the tank ooks like.

This is the uglies. I’ve got diatoms, which is fine. I was a bit alarmed by the bryopsis so soon, but the possibility of dinos scared me a bit. I’m quite happy to wait and see and not panic. But if the bryopsis keeps going I might knock it out.

Still missing hair algae and some cyano to spice things up. I’m more of a wait and see kinda guy

For those of you starting a tank up for the first time… do not panic. Leave it alone. It will be fine as long as your parameters are good!!!

I almost panicked myself into chemically treating my suspected Bryopsis.
Instead I went away a few days and, boom, it’s almost gone.

Compare this picture with the one earlier in the thread.

I assume my CUC had lunch!
