This little guy I just got about two months ago. SB Reefs had it in a frag tank, whole colony, rainbow of colors! Not kidding. I asked for a frag and he sold me one. This is what it looks like now, encrusting and some PE.

Couple more Spaths that came in last year... first one started to die and frag it, the colony dies but this frag grows up and is starting to color up...

The second one dies in less than a 48hrs...

Really this kind of Acropora is hard to keep in tank...

Ooh I like that first one a lot! That's some good looking captive Spath growth if you ask me! So really, what we can say with certainty, is that it's possible to keep them alive and happy. In fact the red/gold colony in the original post is still here, and looking pretty awesome actually! I've been pleasantly surprised. Maybe it likes the new system. And from what i have been told, the purple tip is holding it's own as well:)

Would be a delight to prove the title of this thread wrong!

We should share what we think are contributing factors for keeping spaths well.

For me my spath is in a very very high flow area, with very high PAR, 400-600.

My system is Kalk dose only typical numbers
ALK 10-11
Cal 430
mag 1400-1450
NO3 4ppm
PO4 .05-.09

I change about 35% of my water every two weeks. Feed heavy, skimm heavy, large refugium. Run BRS ROX carbon every two weeks with a small amount of GFO.

Almost identical with only 9alk and no carbon or gfo.

Here is a picture from today and you can see that it's already encrusted more in that short time.

Next MACNA peg the divers to see what enviornment they are collected from. I was surprised when I was told how much tidal range and how turbid the waters are that scolys are collected from. Its possible you are not replicating the spath's natural habitat.

Thank you all! It is by far my favorite in the tank and absolutely glows.

Here is another that has been doing well and holding color. This is 10 months of growth, had it about a year and a half also. Bright yellow with maroon polyps!

Wow, great Spaths! What's your secret? Anything particular about lighting, flow, or nutrient levels that's breeding success?

Honestly not really too sure. They are both fairly close to each other in the tank and get around 400 PAR, and fairly decent flow. I do run my nutrient levels higher now, but they haven't seemed phased when they were lower. Color has increased though.
