Just a quick question: Are you happy with the sand in your tank? Maybe you want sand that is a different color, maybe finer, or maybe you don't want sand at all. Let's hear it! Photo Credit: @Fishingandreefing

I started with CS special grade and I hated it. My sand liking fish obviously didn’t like it as it was big and abrasive. It was incredibly dusty and despite over ten rinses it was still making my tank all cloudy when disturbed. Finally algae and detritus seemed to collect on it all the time.

Switched to CS Fiji pink and it’s far better in all aspects. Two years later and my sand is pure white with no detritus buildup despite never siphoning

I was happy with the black sand in my sps tank until I found out it has iron pieces in it. It’s volcanic ash and scratched the glass with the magnetic cleaner. So after five years I finally removed it all. The tank didn’t miss a beat as I did it over 8 months.

Two of my other tanks have special grade white sand and are okay. Just gotta keep it clean, which I’ve been slacking on lately.

I like the look of sand. I'm buying fish that need the sand.
I found sea floor special grade on sale at chewy and bought two bags to add to what I had.

I wish I could just keep the sand to stay put. I got a lot of flow and a big pile of sand on one end of the tank.

On My 150 SPS tank I went with Tropic Eden Meso flakes a mixture of the two middle sizes and they have been good and have been happy with it. On a 50 gallon tank I just took down I hade the Aquaforest Sand and I did not like it was too light for descant flow. On my Redsea reefer I went with CS spec grade took a lot of rinsing but worked out well. On the newest tank the 240 8Fter I went with Two Little fishes sand. It did not take much to rinse it. But the sizes of the flakes are smaller than the description states. It is nice sand but to light for what I wanted flow wise and dunes have piled up here and there , it does look natural. I pulled about half of it out and mixed in Tampa Bay Live Sand. I really like their sand and should have gone with it from the get go.

I never thought about the black sand having iron in it!

Yes, I used a mixture of everything, from fine Sugar Sand, to ARM, to Shell Rubble. Tons of Pods, by doing this.

I've done the black sand and it looks amazing. But it is pretty light and moves around. Now I exclusively use a mix of reefflakes. They never have all of the sizing in stock so I mix as best I can to get around a 2.5mm grain size.

Thanks. I'm hoping to have water in it by the end of the month. I'll see how well my plumbing skills have held up after almost 30 years. LOL
One thing I'm not looking forward to with a bigger tank is the plumbing, haha.

I have two tanks - my first is the Fluval Evo 13.5 and I used CS Fiji Pink with a 2 inch bed. I didn't know about dipping corals at first and now I've got a sand bed bursting with detritus worms, spaghetti worms and bristle worms and it always looks dirty.

When I set up my 40B a few months ago I used CS Fiji Pink again with a small bag of coarser aragonite mixed in and I really love the sand on this tank. No critters under the sand except my pistol shrimp and Pink Spot Goby. Still going through the uglies and always battling algae on the rocks but my sand is looking great right now - this picture is not current but certainly within the past 6 weeks. I've been moving frags around constantly to see where we are both happy.

I am VERY happy with my sand! I got most of mine as live sand from a friend, but also bought some Carib Sea live sand. My gobies, pitho crabs, and fighting conch all love it as well!

Just restarted my tank after everything had died from hurricane beryl and went without power for 9 days. Decided to go with cs fiji pink and man it’s nice! I enjoy the sprinkle of little pink pebbles on the sand
