This comes up so often but I believe I have come to the conclusion that they are! How do you feel about it?

I like to think of some as being "misguided," but I've never actually had a problem with them bothering corals or upsetting anything. It really does seem to be random as to how the bunch each person gets behaves. Maybe I've always fed waaay too much and that kept them happy?

I think my tuxedo urchin and two of the bigger turbo snails cause more knock-overs/transplants than the hermits.

If your choose the right species, they are great. Pick the wrong type and your snails are all gone, and coral plugs are fair game. Some will even try and munch fish and corals.

I keep them in all my tanks. Never had a problem with them. I have to replace them often in my 220 though because the melanarus wipes them out pretty quick. I only buy the small blue legs and scarlets.

I just got a text message from my girlfriend that she had found one little satan's spawn on the bedroom floor. She was totally confused.

About 4 days ago I was moving a fish from our nano to the DT, and I had to remove a big rock into a bucket in order to catch it. so apparently it fell off the rock in 1.5 seconds between the tank and the bucket, or vice versa. But this was 4 days ago, and it had crawled all the way down the hall from her office to the bedroom and it was still alive! Satan's spawn I tell you!:xd:

I only use scarlet hermits in my tanks but it's definitely one of my favorites. Never had a problem and all snails are accounted for. Even with a couple of monsters ones. Though I do epoxy all my corals down.

Never had a problem with Hermits. Now the longspine urchan is a diff story. Even though he dose great with algea he tends to think he's a bulldozer.

This is a funny post! Never had a problem with them until I got some barnacle blennies. Went to dinner with my wife and the baby sitter called and said that the red legged hermit is hurting one of the new fish. Messed his eye up but it healed and is fine now. Guess the hermit wanted a new home.

How can you hurt a face like this...
