Any Younger Reefers Around?

Noticed most of the members here seem to be on the older side so I just wanted to say hi to my fellow next generation reefers. I'm 20 and been reefing somewhat on and off past 5 years. Most recently kept a mixed seahorse pipefish reef for about 2 years before I had to sell it and move out. Couldn't find any full tank or better pics sorry.

I used to be a younger reefer then life happened.

Imagine most reefers are "older" mainly because they have reached a stage in life where there is more stability and financial means. I had to take a break from 2003 to 2011/12 because of moves. Breaking down tanks every 3 yrs is not fun--and being away from home a lot of the a time doesn't help either.

I'd bet there are a lot of us that started in our teens, took a break, and came back.

Oh for sure. The only reason I did was because I got a pretty lucrative job offer and moved out. Only reason I stopped was because I had to move back to my families place for health stuff.

I mean I’m about 5-6 years older than you and you got 3 years more experience than me ‍ when I was 15 was doing completely different stuff so it’s depends on what you consider old it might just be not to many people in that generation don’t seem to even know about the hobby my job just hired 2 19 year olds and when I showed them my reef tank the 1st thing they said was wait that’s alive I thought they were just rocks not living creatures

I got into the hobby young, did 4 years. No idea what I was doing, winged it

Gave the tank away, and focused on my career and study. Back in the hobby as you say have more stability now. Own house and more money to throw at it, sorta. Inflation destroyed all my hard work. Now what I earn feels average

When I was 15-16 I was probably doing nothing important with my free time, haha. You probably see a lot more older people on here because they have stable jobs, retired, grew up doing it, etc… We do have quite a few younger people on here, I would say the age range is 15-70+ on here

Yeah I’m old, but I’ve been keeping saltwater off and on since the early 80’s when bleached coral skeletons were the thing. Took a break during late high school, college, etc-harder to have a tank when you’re broke and constantly moving. I think there are a lot of older people on here because they got hooked on aquatics early but now finally have the resources (stable home and income) to make it work.

It’s great to have younger people entering the hobby. I’ve been thinking about doing a seahorse/pipefish tank for years, maybe when I retire some day I will have time!

That tank looked beautiful and that is a healthy seahorse, good job!

Honestly I say go for it if you can carve out a month or two. Minus the three sea horses I only had to do maintenance once a month at most. This is with an Acro and a Menella btw.

I love the simplicity of soft corals, so a 100% soft coral reef is my dream. A gsp back wall would be fun too! When it comes to fish, I really love black cap basslets, wheeler's gobies, mandarin gobies, and sixline wrasses. The more color the better!
