Any idea as to what this is?

First time buying coral. I have it in a quarantine tank. Ive had it 5 days and came home from work today to see this on the side of my coral. Any ideas as to what it is? Dont recall seeing it last night. Not even the brown dots it retracts into when i get close to it with tongs.

Hopefully someone will confirm my guess or correct me here (I’m struggling a bit with the pic), but it looks like it may be a “pest” anemone (called “Aiptasia” in the hobby, though IIRC that term technically doesn’t apply to most nems we use the term for).

Yea ive been doing some research and thats what im thinking also but i can't find much info on them first showing up like this. Might have to move my peppermint shrimp into the tank to try and stop it before it spreads. Now im skeptical on putting any of this coral im my display tank

Are these clove polyps?

It really doesn't look like aiptasia. It rather looks like another octocoral but I haven't seen one grow from another coral

Bluemon beat me to it - the new pics seem to show some feathering like you’d see on certain corals such as clove polyps; to double check, though, do the little tentacles coming off the main stalk/body have smaller tentacles coming off of them?

Yes it looks like a tiny feathers coming off the tentacles like the clove polyps only tiny and hard to see

Found this online and this is what it looks like only very tiny and when i get close to it it retreats into a tiny brown speck.

yea, it’s definitely an octocoral, as you can see nine hands.

but again, have not seen them grow that way.

If it's wild caught that's expected, even if it's not clove polyps have a chance to come in with pests, always do an iodine/revive dip

Considering what is attached looks to be amother coral, a dip won’t help

Might be, ive seen daisy polyps grow over a leather lol, though in the chance it isn't, a dip would help, along with removing other pests that can't be seen as I don't think he dipped it.

True. Dipping new arrivals is always a good idea. Won’t remove everything, but it’s so easy to do!

No i didnt dip them yet. I have my dip now so im probably gonna do that today

Clove polyps and while I like them, many reefers do not based on ability to spread. if you dont want them, take a syringe or pipette and inject kalkwasser powder mixed with tank water into a paste the consistency of toothpaste and inject into the very center core and it will melt away
