I just recently acquired a 55g tank that is not reef ready. I was going to use a HOB overflow I have, but I decided since we have a toddler in the house I need to make this tank as simple and worry free as possible. I was looking at getting a Glass Holes kit for the overflow. I wanted to see if there was anybody in the club that would be willing to drill the tank, since I have not drilled a tank before. Maybe it could be done at a club meeting as a demonstration.

Dang, just realized I posted this in the buy forum. Could one of the Mods move it to the proper forum?

Thanks

What stand do you have for the 55. Most of those stands for 55g have zero room for sumps.....I tried dealing with that for a long time as I used to have several extra 55g tanks in the garage

I have a small sump 20x8x14 that I was going to use and SCA 301 skimmer. I know 55's are not ideal, but I'm moving back to my rental property and I really need the narrow dimensions. Unfortunately I did not do enough research and found out today that most 55's are tempered glass on all sides, so it looks like I need to come up with a new plan or buy a reef ready 55:sad:. I have a HOB overflow box, but I really didn't want to use that on this build.

Look on the internet for methods to check for tempered glass (there are several out there). You still may be able to drill it, maybe in the bottom for a corner overflow?

Get a pair of 3d glasses or true polarized sunglasses. Put your.phone inside the tank and turn it on. If its tempered it will be distorted.

you would def need dual overflows and returns on each corner because of the shear length of the tank. The best way, imo, to do a 55 would be to use a remote sump either in a basement, a closet or another room. Over size it, maybe use a 40b, and then put most of your LR in that sump. 50 lbs of rock in a 55 is pretty hard to pull off. Gets jumbled quickly. Good luck though. I think AM has a 55RR

I'll have to check AM. You don't think an over flow just off center of the support brace would be enough?

The one at AM is single drain single return. It would probably be decent with some good powerheads. A WP40 would rock that puppy

So AM does have one in store? I was planning on using two MP10' s that I already have. I'm going to do the phone/sunglasses test when I get home, but I'm pretty sure its a Top Fin tank and all the glass is tempered on their 55 gallon tanks.

drilling them is easy. Just run constant water on it, and put almost zero pressure on it...especially as you near the other side of the glass.

The tank is a Perfecto and their 55's come with all glass tempered, so I will be selling this tank and most likely going with the Deep Blue 55. I'm going to go over to the rental property and take some more measurements before ordering, just in case I made a mistake measuring or to see if there is any way I can fit an 18" deep tank. I would like to go with a 40 breeder, but that extra 6inches is a lot in a small space.

We are moving back to south Knoxville. We bought a house in Maryville a year and a half ago, but we didn't realize how much we liked being close to work and everything else. Maryville is a great area, we just hate the 45min drive back to Knoxville.
