Anemone vs powerhead. Please help!

Hi all!

I have a Nuvo 30L, with 2 AI Prime 16hd, stock pump, 2 RFG returns, Nero 2 on one side, Eflux 660gph on the other side. Tank has a few random frags, 2 clowns and a royal gramma. I also have/had a green BTA.

I recently pulled my rock and re-scaped, causing my BTA to walk a bit. It was planted for the past 2 or 3 days. This morning I woke up to it stuck to my nero. I removed the "nem guard" and slowly (over about 30 mins) got the new loose. It is beat up pretty bad.

I'm hoping someone can chime in and help me determine whether this little guy is a goner or not. The foot is intact, doesn't seem hurt/ripped, but its lost at least 3/4 of its tentacles and is all white and torn up around the mouth. (See pics).

I did a water change, added carbon, and tested. I did a change yesterday (my normal change day) and none of the levels have changed. Everything is 0, nitrate is 0-5, alk 8.5.

I have it in a small cup floating at the top. Every 15-30 mins I dump the cup and refill to make sure it has oxygen, smelling the cup every time to make sure it isn't dying. I have a netted breeder box I can put it in if you guys think it has a chance to survive. I dont want to lose my whole tank while at work...

Forgot to add-
Tank is about a year old, nem has been in the tank about 3 months. It was happy until I moved the rocks (tank looked bad, had to change it up but now I regret it)

Acclimation box would be best location for healing and recovery. As long as foot is intact and tentacles werent chewed up- should recover. Do not attempt tp feed for a couple of days and assure in acclimation box its getting light to maintain needed zooanthellae

Most of the tentacles were chewed up. It still has a few that it extends a little. As far as the white tissue goes, is that just scarred tissue that will heal? Some of it is flaking off.

What you describe reduces chance of recovery but keep an eye for healing and Not further deterioration.
There are anemone guards out there now for most powerhead brands

The Nero had one. In the original post, I said I had to slowly coherse it out of the guard. The foot was stuck in the guard, the tentacles went through and got chopped. In the pictures you can see whats left.

I'm just afraid to leave it overnight and have it die and take the whole tank with it.

My biggest concern would be the toxins released into the tank by the damaged anenome.

I have had an entire tank nuked by an anenome that was blended into soup by a wavemaker.

When it happened a second time I did a huge waterchange > 75%, and then ran purigen and carbon and apart from some dead SPS coral, everything else survived. I don't keep anenomes anymore - not worth the stress when they suddenly decide to go for a float around the tank.

My wife has wanted it gone since the day I got it lol. I on the other hand am stubborn and don't want to admit defeat, I want this thing to thrive.

As fat as nuking the tank, I think I caught it early enough. I did add carbon and did a water change immediately. The tank never "stunk" and my other corals are looking normal. This happened 12 hours ago. The Nem is walking around the cup, so its not dead YET. My concern is the hours/days to come. It still has a few tentacles left, mouth isn't showing.

I guess I'm looking for confirmation that its worth the risk to keep it in an acclimation box overnight, and while I'm away at work.

I would set up a separate hospital tank and order some cipro. Separate tank will prevent any issues arising in your display. Cipro for the just incase scenario and is always good to have on hand for anyone keeping anemone.

I dont have another tank with adequate lighting. Thats why I'm stressing so much. My choices are to ditch the Nem, or keep it in an acclimation box to heal in the tank.

Can be done relatively cheaply. Small pump or airsone, heater, some type of divider and a heater. Light can be a bulb a lot of hardware stores have and a 5gal tank or bucket. Let's see if some pros can weigh in.

That's what this forum is best at. Welcome to R2R! If the people already part of this post or the people tagged in can't help, then no one can. Cipro can be found on sites like chewy. Trick is finding some that doesn't require a script from the vet.

I've been a long time lurker, first time I posted. I spent a few hours digging through forums trying to find a post with a Nem that looks similar. The white tissue is what worries me. Little guy seems to be hanging on so far (again its been 12 hours), just not sure if it can recover. I understand that I shouldn't feed it for a while. Im going to pick up either phyto or rotifers tomorrow to add to the tank and let it do its thing. No target feeding or touching.

Do you remember yours having white tissue around the edges? I didnt see it in your pics. I'm glad yours made a recovery. Im not too worried about time, just that it will survive.

If you look closely at the pics, you can see it. Its around the outer rim. Where the tentacles stop. Im thinking its the pink body of the Nem that got beat up and is scarring. Nothing is coming from the mouth.

If you can get it in some form of hospital tank Even a 5 gallon bucket, that will be best bet for the nem and your DT. And if you plan on owning a Nem I recommend having Cipro on hand because a nem can catch a bacterial infection quick especially when injured. So if you can get some that would be advised but you can do daily water changes for now if you get it in a hospital tank. I wouldn’t give up on it though and would observe it closely and do what you can by what means you have. It looks pretty rough but I’ve seen some pull through that were worse and I’ve had some die with less damage. As long as it reacts to light and attaches itself it’s got a chance. If it starts to look squishy or starts to stink then it’s done
